I dunno how ya doin on the inside honey…but your HAIR sure is holdin up beautiful!
Truvey (Dolly Parton) Steel Magnolias – 1989
Do you know how they say one smell can bring a flood of memories back to you? Well, I believe a hairstyle can do the same thing! Our hair takes on many shapes and forms throughout our lifetime. With each changing style, we can pinpoint it to a time, place and period in our history. Let me give you a few examples.
My first short haircut was the “Dorothy Hamill” wedge cut! I wanted that bowl shaped hair so bad I begged my Mom every day for months until she finally relented and took me to whack off my long stringy hair. I was in Mr. Lowder’s sixth grade class. The mention of that haircut immediately makes me think of that man, his horn rimmed glasses, bad breath and big chubby fingers pointing at yet another math problem I got wrong!
I got my first perm around the age of 13. It was a tight curly mess that I had no idea how to manage. This was the beginning of my makeup experimentation days. Just image this if you can: tight perm, mouth full of braces, teal eyeliner with blue mascara, pink blush and coral lipstick. I was going for a Boy George look, but I ended up walking around looking like a crazed Little Orphan Annie. The boys at the skating rink didn’t know what hit them! Literally, I’d run into them and you would hear whispers of “Who/what was that???”
Then Katie entered my life.
Katie Bowers has been a friend, confidant and my hairstylist since I was 16 years old. I have sat in Katie’s chair through so many changes in my life. She has permed, highlighted, hot rolled, shaped, straightened and cut my hair, all the while talking about life, love, frustrations and good times. Do you remember the scenes from Steel Magnolias where the women discussed life while Truvey did their hair? Being at Katie’s salon is very much like that! The back drop is hair but the real experience is the therapy that comes from women getting together and discussing what’s going on in their life.
Katie hot rolled and teased my hair to respectable 1989 heights while I got ready for the prom and stressed out over my full length sequined gown.
She straightened it to true 1990 Gen-X lengths while talking about the angst of figuring out what to do with the rest of my life at 20.
She cut it all off for my wedding and listened to me plan flowers, cakes and bridesmaid dresses.
When I lived in California and was too far to have her do my hair, I grew it out to unspeakable shapes until I could get back to Katie’s on my visits home so she could fix it.
Katie has been there to see me through pregnancy, career changes, life changes and everything in between! I wouldn’t let anyone else touch my hair. Like any relationship, it’s the history that makes it special and in the case of my friendship with Katie, it comes with the added bonus of knowing wherever we are, she is going to make sure my hair is holding up beautifully.
This episode is about hair, but it’s also about showing you my beautiful friend Katie Bowers’ talents. She is a mother, a wife, a friend and she can do some kick ass hair!
Love you Katie!
