Do you ever find yourself having marathon sessions of episodic television? I’ve always been fond of TLC (The Learning Channel). My obsession with this channel started with A Baby Story when I was pregnant with each of my kids. I’d sit watching episode after episode and cry every time a woman, whom I’ve never met mind you, gave birth. Cut me a little slack, I was pregnant and hormonal.
After my pregnancies were over I moved on to Trading Spaces (those people are the MacGyver of home decorating), Hoarding: Buried Alive (so grotesque it’s enticing), and now I have discovered a new show that I can’t take my eyes off of, Next Great Baker.
Next Great Baker is a spin off of TLC’s popular show Cake Boss starring real life Hoboken, NJ’s Carlos Bakery owner Buddy Valastro. Now, as of this writing, I have never watched an episode of Cake Boss, so I cannot give you a review of that particular show. However, after spending an entire day watching Next Great Baker, I’m totally going to be watching Cake Boss when the new season premiers January 31, 2011.
Next Great Baker, at first glance, appeared to be yet another elimination reality show that I was just going to flip right by. The sight of the most amazing cake constructions sucked me in, however. Before I knew it I had spent all day watching episode after episode of these baking contestants create art out of flour, sugar, Rice Krispie treats and blown sugar! I never got too invested in the contestants themselves on this show, but what I did get invested in was the dream of making a trip to Hoboken, New Jersey just to visit Carlos Bakery!
I won’t spoil the winner for you if you haven’t seen the show yet. I do encourage you to surf your cable menu and find the next marathon of this show. Have some sort of sweets ready at your finger tips, you will be craving cookies, cakes and pralines before the end of the first episode.
