When he finds out that his work superiors host a dinner celebrating the idiocy of their guests, a rising executive questions it when he’s invited, just as he befriends a man who would be the perfect guest.
So let me start out this first review by telling you that this section of my site is just about the things I’m watching, reading, eating or whatever else I might feel like talking about. It will more than likely be random. The films could be latest releases in the theater or they could be something that was made before I was born; ya know, 1990 or so
With that said, here is my review of the DVD rental Dinner for Schmucks.
The attraction for me to this rental wasn’t so much the topic as it was the cast: Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis and Kristen Schaal, just to name a few of the great current comedic geniuses out there right now.
Steve Carell plays quirky, uncomfortable schmuk Barry to Paul Rudd‘s straight man Tim. The combo of these two together was really well played. Rudd has enough comedic physical innate ability that even playing the straight guy he makes you break out into a smile. Carell in the role of Barry is hilarious. He puts such an air of awkwardness in many scenes by his timing and delivery that you can’t help but laugh when you would least expect to. They move from scene to scene in this film with great hilarious fluidity! Throw in Galifianakis as Therman, Barry’s mind controlling boss at the IRS, and you’ve got awkward, odd and laugh when you least expect it comedy at it’s best.
Also having the understated Kristen Schaal playing Tim’s dissatisfied assistant was a brilliant casting move. I recently did a review of Schaal‘s latest book The Sexy Book of Sexy Sex for her publisher Chronicle Books. Great piece of raunchy literature!
So, you have the synopsis, you can watch the trailer and this rental gets my thumbs up RANDOM REVIEW approval! Check it out!
